Blue Jackets Notes: Provorov, Danforth, Keskinen

Blue Jackets Weigh Provorov’s Future, Shuffle Agent Representation

Columbus Navigates Key Offseason Decisions

As the NHL offseason approaches, the Columbus Blue Jackets are actively engaging with key players, including pending unrestricted free agent **Ivan Provorov**, while also seeing shifts in player representation. The team faces choices that will shape its defensive core and forward lines for the coming season.

Provorov Contract Talks Heat Up

The Blue Jackets recently held discussions with **Ivan Provorov**’s representative at the NHL Combine. The 28-year-old defenseman is projected to be a top player available on the open market next month. He could realistically command a maximum-term contract, potentially reaching seven years with most teams, or even eight years if signed by Columbus before the end of June.

However, General Manager **Don Waddell** appears to favor a shorter-term agreement with **Provorov**, potentially at a higher average annual value (AAV). The Blue Jackets currently have over $40 million in cap space, according to PuckPedia, affording them the flexibility to offer a competitive deal even with a shorter duration. **Provorov** recorded 33 points in 81 games last season, averaging over 23 minutes of ice time per night, leaving his willingness to accept a shorter pact uncertain.

Danforth Seeks New Representation

Forward **Justin Danforth** has changed agents, moving from Puck Agency’s **Jay Grossman** to Newport’s **Pat Morris**. **Danforth** enjoyed a breakout season, playing center full-time for the first time and registering nine goals and 12 assists in 61 games. Coming off a one-year, $1.1 million contract, he is expected to attract interest on the open market, though re-signing with Columbus remains his preference.

The demand for experienced forwards is high; according to a recent analysis by CapFriendly, players with similar production to **Danforth** have signed contracts averaging $2.25 million annually. CapFriendly

Keskinen’s European Option

Prospect **Oiva Keskinen**’s entry-level contract with the Blue Jackets includes a European Assignment Clause. The 21-year-old will have the opportunity to compete for a roster spot, but can return to Tappara in Finland’s Liiga if he doesn’t make the team out of training camp. **Keskinen** posted 15 goals and 20 assists in 59 regular season games in Liiga, but his playoff performance was limited to a single assist in nine outings.

The Blue Jackets are clearly evaluating their options as they prepare for the upcoming season, balancing the desire to retain key players with the need to develop their prospect pool. These early moves signal a proactive approach to roster construction.
