Jakarta – The group phase of the 2023 Qatar Asian Cup has been completed. The round of 16 slots are completely filled. The Indonesian national team was one of the successful ones in the knockout rounds thanks to fourth place in the best third place standings.
Apart from Indonesia, another Southeast Asian team that has qualified for the round of 16 is the Thai national team. They are in second place in Group F standings.
Two Southeast Asian representatives, the Vietnam National Team and the Malaysian National Team, had their steps stopped in the group phase. They are at the bottom of their respective group standings.
Vietnam experienced bad luck, who were in Group D with Indonesia. Philippe Troussier’s squad did not get any points from the three matches they played.
This record makes them included in the list of teams with zero points in the 2023 Asian Cup along with the Hong Kong National Team (Group C) and the Indian National Team (Group B).
The team nicknamed The Golden Stars failed to repeat their achievements in the 2019 Asian Cup. At that time they managed to reach the quarter-finals.

Vietnam suffered three consecutive defeats in Group D. First they lost 2-4 against Japan. Next they lost 0-1 to Indonesia, and finally were defeated 2-3 by Iraq.

India had a tough match at the start of Group B against Australia and lost 0-2. In the second match they were defeated by Uzbekistan with a score of 0-3, and in the last match they lost 0-1 to Syria.
