The Surabaya Health Office warns against DHF

Surabaya (ANTARA) – The Surabaya City Health Office appealed to residents to increase their awareness of the potential for Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF), which usually occurs during the rainy season.

Head of the Surabaya City Health Service (Dinkes) Nanik Sukristina in Surabaya, Monday, said that the Surabaya City Government had conveyed the warning to the Surabaya City Government to be vigilant about dengue fever to the Lurah and Sub-District Heads through a Circular Letter (SE) to be forwarded to the community.

“This is in the framework of Prevention and Control of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (P2P-DBD) in Surabaya, so we convey this to increase awareness of the potential increase in DHF cases which usually occur in the rainy season,” said Nanik.

This, he continued, given the increase in cases in 2022 compared to 2021, and there are still areas with a real larva-free rate (ABJ) of less than 95 percent, the Surabaya Health Office also asked the Lurah and Camat to mobilize the community/members in each work area to increase awareness of DHF by doing several things.

First, optimizing the role of the Great Surabaya Cadre (KSH) as the Coordinator for the Implementation of Mosquito Nest Eradication (PSN), namely by ensuring that there are no larvae at Aedes Sp mosquito breeding sites in each work area.

“Second, ensuring community participation in the implementation of the eradication of mosquito nests by appointing a larva monitoring officer (Jumantik) in the Jumantik One House One Movement (61R1J) and ensuring that no larvae are found in their homes,” he said.

Third, Nanik appealed to the public to eradicate the vector of dengue transmission by carrying out the PSN DHF movement regularly through 3M PLUS activities, namely draining and brushing clean the bathtub/pool of water at least once a week.

“Then, tightly close water storage containers such as jars, reservoirs, drums and others. And finally, use or recycle used items that can hold water,” he said.

In addition, in this Circular, the Surabaya Health Office also urges the public to do a number of other things to prevent dengue fever, including changing the water in flower vases, bird drinking bowls or other similar places once a week. Also, repair drains and gutters that are clogged or not smooth.

“Furthermore, closing holes in bamboo or tree pieces, etc. with soil and so on. As well as sprinkling larvicidal larvae killer powder, such as in places that are difficult to drain or in areas where water is scarce,” he said.

Not only that, he said, his party also appealed to the public to install wire screens on windows and doors of houses as an effort to prevent dengue fever. Also, avoid the habit of hanging clothes in the room and seek adequate lighting and room ventilation.

This includes using mosquito nets while sleeping and using drugs that can prevent mosquito bites, such as lotions and sprays.

In addition, people are encouraged to plant plants that mosquitoes don’t like, such as lemongrass, lavender, rosemary in the environment around offices or residential areas. And finally, the community is also invited to clean up the environment and mosquito nests.

“Immediately report if there is a family or community affected by dengue fever to the nearest health center,” said Nanik.

Nanik also explained a number of symptoms of DHF cases. Among other things, high fever without a reason ranging from 2 to 7 days. A rash or red spots appear on the skin and pain in the muscles and joints. Experiencing dizziness, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite and pain in the pit of the stomach and nosebleeds or mild bleeding of the gums.

“As for laboratory results, Platelets 100,000/mm3, Hematocrit increased by 20 percent, positive serological tests (IgG, IgM, NS1),” he said.
