99ers Secure Champions Hockey League Spot with 5-2 Win Over Capitals

February 25, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Vienna, Austria – Former Formula 1 champion Mika Häkkinen performed the ceremonial face-off at Wednesday’s win2day ICE Hockey League game between the Vienna Capitals and Graz99ers, a match ultimately won by Graz with a score of 5-2.

The two-time world champion, who secured Formula 1 titles in 1998 and 1999, participated in the pre-game ritual at the Wiener Steffl Arena, a gesture facilitated through his connection with Vienna Capitals President Martin Reiss, a former Formula 1 manager. Häkkinen is known to be a fan of ice hockey, having played the sport as a child, according to reports.

Despite an early 2-0 lead for the Vienna Capitals, with goals from Jeremy Gregoire and Zane Franklin, Graz99ers mounted a comeback. Kevin Conley scored for Graz in the 13th minute, assisted by Lukas Haudum, narrowing the gap. Haudum then equalized in the 30th minute, and Michael Schiechl, a former Capitals player, put Graz ahead before the complete of the second period.

Graz99ers solidified their lead in the third period with goals from Nico Feldner and Schiechl, securing a 5-2 victory. The win guarantees Graz99ers a spot in the Champions Hockey League for the upcoming season. Graz99ers President Herbert Jerich stated after the game that the team’s ambition extends beyond Champions Hockey League qualification, aiming for the league championship.

The Vienna Capitals, whereas falling short against Graz, secured a significant off-ice win by acquiring top Graz99ers defenseman Nick Bailen for the next season. The 36-year-old American defenseman has recorded over 50 scorer points this season and was previously with the Kölner Haie before joining Graz in December 2024.
