820 Wild Animals Rescued by French Gendarmerie in Var
More than 820 animals were rescued from an illegal breeding operation in Flassans-sur-Issole, in the Var department of France, following a joint operation on Thursday, March 19, 2026, involving the gendarmerie, the Departmental Directorate for the Protection of Populations (DDPP), and the Société Protectrice des Animaux (SPA).
The operation targeted an undeclared animal breeding facility, where animals were reportedly kept in conditions deemed incompatible with their physiological and behavioral needs. Authorities discovered 823 animals in total: 237 dogs, predominantly border collies, 268 rabbits, 267 pigeons, five goats, two pigs, nine guinea fowl, 12 chickens and roosters, and 19 parakeets, according to a statement released by the gendarmerie.
The investigation began after numerous reports from veterinarians, purchasers, and animal protection associations regarding the sale of puppies exhibiting behavioral problems and the existence of an unregistered canine breeding operation. On February 2nd, 2026, the DDPP conducted an initial inspection of the couple operating the facility. Subsequent searches on March 19th led to the discovery and removal of the animals.
Authorities noted that the animals lacked sufficient food and were housed in unsanitary conditions, lacking natural light and adequate ventilation. The DDPP also reported a lack of clear and complete health records. The owners, specializing in breeding companion animals, will be summoned to court on charges of serious animal abuse and undeclared operate, according to the gendarmerie.
The gendarmerie of Le Luc-en-Provence led the operation, coordinating with the DDPP and the SPA to secure the animals and dismantle the illegal breeding operation. The case highlights concerns about unregulated animal breeding and the welfare of animals raised in such environments.
