Flight Details and Confirmed Casualties in Samburu County
The aircraft involved in the tragedy was a Eurocopter EC130B4, registered under the number 5Y-GYM. FlightRadar24 tracking data cited by the Daily Mail indicated that the helicopter reached an altitude of 5,600 feet with a ground speed of 85 knots near the foothills of Mount Ololokwe shortly before the crash. Samburu Police Commander David Nkoroi confirmed that all seven occupants—six passengers and the pilot—lost their lives in the remote accident site located approximately 217 miles north of Nairobi.
International verification from the U.S. State Department established that five of the victims were United States citizens. Among those identified through local and diplomatic reporting were Michele Sensi-Contugi, director of Ecuador’s National Intelligence Center, and his wife, Stephany Hollihan, a U.S. and Ecuadorian citizen. Additionally, regional media and network statements identified Jose Suarez, a 55-year-old president and general manager of several Telemundo stations in Florida, among the deceased.
Tourism Infrastructure and Emergency Response Operations
The passengers were guests associated with the luxury travel company &Beyond, originating from the Suyian Lodge in the Loisaba wildlife reserve. The company offers high-end excursions featuring aerial tours above the Suguta Valley and Mount Ololokwe—a sacred mountain for the local Samburu people that rises 6,560 feet above sea level. In response to the disaster, the Kenya Red Cross deployed emergency rescue teams to participate in a multi-agency response alongside local authorities.

Tropic Air Kenya dispatched two auxiliary helicopters to support search and rescue operations in the rugged terrain. Meanwhile, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) announced that the Air Accident Investigation Department within the Ministry of Roads and Transport is leading the formal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the wreck. &Beyond issued a statement expressing profound sympathies to the families affected while deferring further updates to investigating authorities.
Broader Aviation Context in East Africa
This incident adds to a series of aviation accidents in Kenya, where domestic carriers play a critical role in ferrying visitors to distant wildlife reserves. In March, a separate helicopter crash in western Kenya claimed six lives, including a member of parliament. The country also experienced a national loss in 2024 when military chief General Francis Omondi Ogolla died in an army helicopter crash in the western region that carried 11 people, with only two survivors.
