Six Killed in Krakow Market Square Shooting
Six people died and sixteen others sustained injuries when a 24-year-old Polish citizen wearing military-style gear opened fire from a vehicle in the Main Market Square of Krakow, Poland, on Saturday, November 7, 2026.
Interior Ministry Details Radical Ideology and Weapon Recovery
Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski stated during a press conference that preliminary evidence points toward a severe radical right-wing ideological obsession. Authorities recovered multiple weapons and a large quantity of ammunition from the vehicle driven by the suspect. Police officers and agents from the Internal Security Agency deployed immediately to both the historic city center and the suspect’s family residence, according to CNN Indonesia.
Kierwinski praised the police force for preventing a much larger loss of life. Officers returned fire and took the suspect into custody roughly three minutes after receiving the initial emergency reports. The suspect sustained injuries during the arrest and remains hospitalized.
Police Discover Three More Bodies at Suspect Home
During subsequent searches tied to the investigation, authorities made a grim discovery at the suspect’s residence in Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski, located less than 200 kilometers north of Krakow. Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed in an emergency briefing that the bodies of two women and one man were found inside the home. Tusk stated there are strong indications that these three deceased individuals were close family members of the shooter. Law enforcement deployed a drone to inspect the interior of the residential building prior to entry by counter-terrorism units due to suspected weapons caches inside.

National Mourning and Municipal Restrictions Imposed
In response to the tragedy, President Karol Nawrocki initiated formal procedures to establish a two-day national mourning period across Poland spanning November 8 through November 9. Separately, Krakow Mayor Lukasz Gibala declared a municipal mourning period lasting through November 11, during which the city remains closed.
Ongoing Investigation into Suspect Background
Local police have formally rejected unverified media reports suggesting the presence of active accomplices or any casualties among law enforcement personnel. Foreign nationals are among the sixteen wounded individuals taken to hospitals. Authorities have not yet disclosed the specific identities of the victims or the exact ideological groups that may have influenced the attacker.
