6.3-magnitude earthquake jolts off Indonesia’s Aceh, no potential for tsunami-Xinhua

Magnitude 6.3 Earthquake Strikes Off Indonesia’s Aceh Coast

A powerful undersea earthquake registered 6.3 magnitude off the coast of Indonesia’s western Aceh province early Tuesday. Authorities confirmed the seismic event, but no tsunami warning was issued.

Tremors Felt in Aceh

The shaking occurred at 1:41 AM local Jakarta time. The epicenter was situated 247 kilometers northwest of Sabang town in Aceh province, at a depth of 15 kilometers below the seabed. The intensity of the tremors was assessed as II to III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar Regency.

No Tsunami Threat

The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency stated that the earthquake was not expected to generate significant waves, thus no tsunami alert was activated.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for frequent seismic activity. In 2023 alone, the country experienced over 1,000 earthquakes, highlighting its vulnerability to geological events (USGS).
