49ers Substation Health Concerns Proven False After Independent Testing

August 26, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

The San Francisco 49ers declared the electromagnetic environment surrounding their stadium and adjacent practice facility entirely safe following an independent scientific investigation into the Northern Receiving Station. According to statements made by general manager John Lynch at the annual NFL league meeting, exposure levels inside the facilities measured up to 400 times below unsafe thresholds.

Electromagnetic Field Testing Results

Fears regarding the electrical substation escalated toward the conclusion of the 2025 NFL season. Unverified theories circulated online, suggesting that high-voltage power lines and electrical coils at the Northern Receiving Station were exposing players to elevated electromagnetic forces. Critics floated the substation as an explanation for the franchise’s heavy player attrition during a campaign that ended with a playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks, during which key starters like quarterback Brock Purdy, linebacker Fred Warner, and defensive end Nick Bosa missed significant time.

Former tight end Delanie Walker fueled speculation on the “Bussin’ With the Boys” podcast in January, stating that the substation had been a lingering worry and that rumors had connected it to serious health risks. Prompted by internal concerns from current players who privately urged management to investigate, the organization hired an independent scientist with over 45 years of experience studying electromagnetic fields.

According to John Lynch, speaking at the annual league meeting, the expert evaluated the practice fields, weight room, cafeteria, locker room, and meeting rooms. The findings indicated that radiation exposure levels were comparable to using common household appliances like a hair dryer or vacuum cleaner, matching typical workplace metrics.

“We’re safe,” Lynch said. “We’re in a safe place of work, the levels I think I read in the report are 400 times less than unsafe zones.”

Impact on Free Agency and Player Recruitment

Despite public anxiety and viral theories regarding the electrical equipment sitting just south of the practice fields, the controversy failed to disrupt front office operations. Management entered the free-agency period prepared to field questions from prospective acquisitions.

According to Lynch, none of the incoming free agents, including veteran receiver Mike Evans during the negotiation of his three-year contract, raised inquiries about the substation. The topic never surfaced as a point of leverage against the franchise during contract talks.

Upgrading Infrastructure and Resolving Player Complaints

While the substation investigation cleared the facility of physical hazard, franchise leadership acknowledged valid criticisms regarding other internal operations. The 49ers received low scores in categories such as the training room and training staff on the annual report card issued by the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA), securing C-minuses in those areas.

Past surveys highlighted inadequate hot and cold tub space alongside frequent malfunctions in locker room showers and saunas. In response, the organization launched a $9 million capital improvement project focused on the hydro area.

Furthermore, the franchise hired three additional physical therapists to address demands for personalized care. “The modern athlete wants more one-on-one attention,” Lynch noted regarding the survey results.

Meanwhile, contract discussions with left tackle Trent Williams intensified, signaling stability for the team’s roster construction ahead of upcoming fiscal quarters.
