49ers beat Commanders 23-17 as Brock Purdy sets NFL passer rating record
Brock Purdy threw a touchdown pass and Christian McCaffrey ran for two scores as the San Francisco 49ers built a 20-point lead and held on to defeat the Washington Commanders 23-17 on Monday night, extending their unbeaten start to the season to six games, sportsnet.ca reported. The 49ers improved to a 5-0 record in games prior to this contest, a run that includes victories over the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks and the rival Los Angeles Rams.
Defensive Stops Preserve the Lead
The 49ers jumped to a 20-3 lead late in the first half at Levi’s Stadium, according to DAZN. DAZN reported that Christian McCaffrey scored twice while George Kittle added an 11-yard touchdown catch from Brock Purdy to stake the hosts to a 23-3 advantage in the third quarter. An Eddy Piñeiro field goal after the break gave the 49ers their 20-point cushion without completely putting Washington out of contention.
Jayden Daniels engineered a second-half comeback for Washington, connecting with Stefon Diggs and Rachaad White for touchdowns to cut the deficit to 23-17. DAZN noted that Washington had an opportunity to take the lead late in the fourth quarter, but Malik Mustapha broke up a fourth-down pass intended for Treylon Burks near the goal line. Washington got the ball back at its 46-yard line with 52 seconds remaining, but a grounding penalty and sacks ended the final sequence.
