The release of updated Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) for Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server is streamlining IT administration, according to guidance published by Microsoft and detailed in recent reports from industry analysts.
RSAT, a collection of utilities, allows IT professionals to remotely manage Windows Server systems from a Windows client computer. The tools encompass Server Manager, MMC snap-ins, PowerShell modules, and command-line tools, facilitating server configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting. The latest iterations of RSAT are designed to support Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and the forthcoming Windows Server 2025.
Historically, RSAT required separate downloads. Though, beginning with the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, the tools are now integrated directly into the Windows build, simplifying installation. This change applies to Windows 10 and 11 Pro and Enterprise editions only. RSAT is not supported on Home editions.
Installation on Windows 10 and 11 involves navigating to the “Optional features” section within the Apps & features settings. Users can then add and select specific RSAT tools, such as those for Active Directory, DHCP, and DNS. The process is similar on Windows 11, utilizing the settings app and the “View Features” button to locate and install the desired components.
For Windows Server environments (2016, 2019, and 2022), RSAT installation is managed through Server Manager, utilizing the “Add roles and features” wizard. Administrators select the “Role-based or feature-based installation” option and navigate to the “Remote Server Administration Tools” feature set.
PowerShell also provides an installation pathway. While details of the PowerShell commands were not provided in available documentation, the availability of this method offers an alternative for automated deployments and scripting.
Microsoft’s documentation indicates that access to RSAT resources may require authorization, and users may require to sign in or change directories to gain access. Installation of Windows Admin Center on Domain Controller hosts is not supported, necessitating installation on a Gateway Server running Windows Server 2016 or later.
