Magnitude 7.3 Quake Off Venezuelan Coast Shakes Caracas
Thousands of miles away, a much larger seismic event disrupted daily life across Venezuela. A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck Tuesday near Yaguaraparo, off the northeastern coast of the country, according to the US Geological Survey. The quake had a depth of 76.5 miles, and no tsunami warnings were issued following the initial shock.
Residents in the capital city of Caracas felt prolonged shaking. Speaking to CNN, Caracas-based reporter Stefano Pozzebon mentioned that the tremor lasted for a minimum of one minute, prompting the evacuation of the seven-story building he occupied. Further east on the northern coast, Irald Cabrera, a translator for a tour company in Güiria located 43 miles from the epicenter, described a tense scene. Cabrera told CNN that the earthquake lasted about a minute, with three aftershocks shortly after. “This one was strong, and we were afraid,” Cabrera said.
Infrastructure Damage and Emergency Response
The impact in Venezuela extended to older and vulnerable structures. In Caracas, more than 370 miles west of the epicenter, an abandoned skyscraper that served as a home for squatters suffered severe damage, causing its top floors to lean precariously over the street. The surrounding area was quickly evacuated by local authorities.
Government officials moved swiftly to address potential hazards. Venezuelan Interior Minister Néstor Luis Reverol asked for people to remain calm via his official Twitter account. Additionally, Reverol stated that upwards of 20,000 workers belonging to Venezuela’s Civil Protection and Disaster organization were sent out to assist any citizens requiring aid. While the country’s Interior Ministry reported no immediate deaths or injuries, several buildings sustained structural damage from the intense shaking.
When major natural disasters compromise regional facilities, municipal authorities and private enterprises must coordinate rapid recovery efforts.
