Cillian Murphy is in talks to reprise his role in a third installment of the “28 Years Later” franchise, Sony Pictures announced December 11, 2025, following the positive reception to the recently released “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.” The news confirms Sony’s commitment to completing a trilogy that began with Danny Boyle’s 2002 breakout hit, “28 Days Later.”
The decision to move forward with a third film comes after a bidding war for the rights to “28 Years Later” in January 2024, with Sony ultimately securing the project. Initially, Sony committed to two films, which were shot back-to-back. The success of the first film, released in June 2025, grossing $151.3 million worldwide, bolstered the case for a continuation of the story.
Alex Garland, who penned the script for “28 Years Later” and “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” is currently writing the screenplay for the third film. Danny Boyle, director of the original, is expected to direct the final installment, according to previous statements. Nia DaCosta directed “The Bone Temple,” which stars Ralph Fiennes, reprising his role as Dr. Kelson, and Jack O’Connell as Jimmy Crystal. Alfie Williams and Jodie Comer also feature in the second film.
Murphy’s potential return marks a significant development for the franchise, as he was the star of the original “28 Days Later.” His inclusion is expected to be a major marketing asset for the third film, particularly given his recent Academy Award win for his performance in “Oppenheimer.” He will also have a small role in “The Bone Temple,” which is set to premiere January 16, 2026.
“28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” has already garnered critical praise, with reviewers highlighting its bold vision and standout performances. The film concludes with several unresolved plot threads, including the fate of Spike, played by Alfie Williams, and the ambiguous connection between Dr. Kelson and the infected individual known as Samson, portrayed by Chi Lewis-Parry. Sony has not commented on the specifics of Murphy’s role or the overall narrative direction of the third film.
