Gold Derby’s film predictions for the 2027 Golden Globes are settling in after weeks of category confusion and last-minute switches, with titles like Project Hail Mary, Artificial, and I Play Rocky climbing by double digits in the odds after moving into the comedy or musical race.

Category Shifts Reshape the Comedy and Musical Race

Movies entered the comedy or musical category in part to avoid direct competition with The Odyssey in the drama race. Project Hail Mary jumped 37% in the combined nominations odds since moving into the category a week ago, according to goldderby.com. Ryan Gosling’s standing in the Best Film Comedy/Musical Actor contest climbed 40% following the space-set film’s designation change, putting him close to the top tier led by John Malkovich in Wild Horse Nine, Seth Rogen in The Invite, and Tom Cruise in Digger.

Other contenders followed similar paths. Artificial gained 23% after switching over from drama, while I Play Rocky climbed 9% in the overall comedy/musical odds. Anthony Ippolito, starring in I Play Rocky, rose 22% in the actor category over a week. Wild Horse Nine and The Invite are tied for the top spot in the tightest comedy or musical race in recent memory.

Actresses also saw movement from unusual category placements. Inde Navarrette secured the third spot in Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress for Obsession, a horror film that surprised observers by successfully submitting as a comedy or musical rather than a drama, according to goldderby.com. Olivia Wilde for The Invite and Julianne Moore for The Debut lead that category.

Front-Runners Hold Firm in Best Film Drama

While comedies saw heavy shuffling, the drama category retained familiar heavyweights at the top. The Odyssey shares the number one spot for Best Film Drama with La Bola Negra, which gained ground after winning the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. Gold Derby places Dune: Part Three, All of a Sudden, Fjord, and Elsinore rounding out the projected six-film field.

In the Best Film Drama Actor contest, the top five positions remained steady with Andrew Scott for Elsinore, Matt Damon for The Odyssey, Robert Pattinson for Primetime, Pedro Pascal for Behemoth!, and Sebastian Stan for Fjord. John Turturro for The Only Living Pickpocket in New York, Jaafar Jackson for Michael, and Jordan Firstman for Club Kid all rose by double digits to fight for the sixth spot.

The 2027 Golden Globe nominations in film and television will be announced on December 7.
