2026 Nobel Prize in Medicine Awarded for Breakthroughs in Optogenetics

2026 Nobel Prize in Medicine Awarded for Breakthroughs in Optogenetics

October 5, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

American researcher Karl Deisseroth and German researchers Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine on October 5, 2026, for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.

Optogenetics and the Neural Circuitry of the Brain

The Karolinska Institute medical university awarded the prize to the trio for breakthroughs that allow scientists to control the activity of individual nerve cells in a living brain using light. The field helps researchers understand how specific cell types contribute to behaviours such as learning, fear, addiction, and movement. The Nobel Assembly stated that optogenetics has fundamentally altered our understanding of the brain by revealing neural circuits governing specific memories, feelings, and behaviours relevant for neurological and psychiatric disorders. Clinical medicine researchers are currently applying this technique in efforts to bring back sight to individuals suffering from visual impairment.

Thomas Perlmann, Secretary-General of the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet, stated that the method is now being used in laboratories around the world to reveal the brain’s mysteries. Scientists are testing a treatment in clinical trials where a light-sensitive protein is implanted into the retina to restore eyesight for people suffering from retinitis pigmentosa. Scientists also hold out hope that optogenetics could enhance cochlea implants, enabling much finer control over the auditory nerve compared to existing electrical technologies.

The Path from Algae Research to Laboratory Application

The timeline of discovery began in the early 1990s, when Hegemann investigated how the alga Chlamydomonas reacts to light in half a millisecond, hypothesising that a single protein captured light and acted as an ion channel. Nagel tested this hypothesis by injecting Chlamydomonas genes into frog eggs, discovering channelrhodopsin-2, which is an ion channel that opens when exposed to light. In 2003, the researchers published findings that this protein could be introduced into human and hamster cells to generate electrical impulses using light. Stanford’s Deisseroth successfully showcased the procedure using rat neurons by the year 2005, and the term optogenetics was coined twelve months later.

Perlmann stated that he spoke to all three laureates on the morning of the announcement, noting that they were surprised and delighted. The recipients expressed that it was an honour to receive the prize together and referred to each other as friends. The laureates will share a prize sum amounting to 12 million Swedish crowns, equivalent to $1.2 million. They will receive their prize, along with a diploma and a gold medal, from King Carl XVI Gustaf at a formal ceremony in Stockholm on December 10, marking the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.

Upcoming Nobel Prize Announcements in Stockholm and Oslo

The physiology or medicine prize traditionally opens the annual Nobel announcements, with subsequent awards scheduled throughout the week. The physics prize will be announced on Tuesday, followed by chemistry on Wednesday and literature on Thursday. The peace prize, which is the only Nobel award presented in Oslo, is scheduled for Friday. Last year’s medicine prize was awarded to Mary Brunkow and Fred Ramsdell of the United States and Shimon Sakaguchi of Japan for research into how the immune system is kept in check.
