2026 Assistive Tech R&D Grants: Online Information Session

South Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare announced today the launch of an online briefing regarding new support initiatives for assistive devices aimed at enhancing the independent living of individuals with disabilities and the elderly. The briefing, scheduled for an unspecified date, requires pre-registration.

The announcement signals a continued government focus on bolstering accessibility for aging populations and those with disabilities, building on existing legislation such as the “Act on Support for Assistive Devices for the Disabled, Elderly, etc.”, enacted to minimize limitations on activity and improve quality of life through efficient provision of assistive device services.

The 2026 initiatives will focus on research and development of practical assistive technologies. Details regarding specific projects and funding allocations were not immediately available, but the Ministry indicated the briefing will cover eligible projects and application procedures. The Ministry’s announcement follows a broader trend of government support for assistive technologies, including programs offering financial assistance for the purchase or rental of devices like wheelchairs, walkers, and visual aids.

According to a 2025 report, the existing “Customized Assistive Service” provides support for a wide range of devices, with eligibility determined by income and health status. Application processes are currently managed through local governments, welfare centers, the National Health Insurance Service, and the online Bok지로 platform. The Ministry has not yet specified whether the 2026 initiatives will alter these existing application pathways.

The National Rehabilitation Center provides resources for identifying appropriate assistive devices based on disability type, age, and economic status. The Ministry’s announcement does not indicate any changes to this existing support structure.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the specific number of projects to be funded or the total budget allocated for the 2026 initiatives. Further details are expected to be released during the online briefing, for which pre-registration is required.
