FBR‍ Confirms September 30th Deadline for Income Tax Returns

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) issued a statement Monday clarifying that the⁣ deadline for filing income tax returns for the 2025 tax year remains September 30th. The announcement comes in ‌response to circulating, ⁢unverified reports suggesting a possible extension.

The⁤ FBR specifically refuted claims linking a potential extension ⁣to the recent nationwide‍ floods and monsoon rainfall, noting that a significant portion of the taxpayer population ‍resides in areas unaffected by the ‍disaster and has had sufficient time to fulfill their tax obligations.

The‌ board also dismissed reports of slowdowns within the Integrated Risk Facts System (IRIS), stating the‌ system is “fully operational, functioning smoothly,” and accessible for filing‌ returns using the recently simplified tax form.

Taxpayers were warned⁤ that failure to file by⁤ the deadline will result in late-filer status and associated penalties as‍ outlined⁢ by law. The FBR ‌urged all eligible taxpayers ⁢to file ‍accurate and honest returns before September 30, 2025, to avoid legal repercussions.

An exception exists for cases of “extreme hardship,” allowing for a fifteen-day extension with ‌payment of due taxes by September‌ 30th,subject to approval by the relevant committee as per established procedures.

This confirmation follows a recent goverment decision to remove ‌a controversial asset valuation column from the 2025 income tax return form. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif‌ established a committee,⁢ led by Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, to review the column‍ requiring declaration of estimated⁢ fair market value of assets, ultimately leading to its removal‌ following consultations with tax officials.
