The targeted sites included a storage facility, an illegal gas station, a residence, a workshop, and a ranch. At the ranch, authorities discovered the extensive collection of wildlife alongside 18,000 gallons of diesel, fuel tanks, pumps, and firearms, as reported by CBS News. One person was arrested during the operation and handed over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The wildlife inventory comprised 135 specimens. Among them were five Bengal tigers, three jaguars, 21 spider monkeys, two hyenas, three African lions, bison, buffalo, a camel, and sulcata tortoises, as detailed by the Mexico Daily Post. CBS News noted the presence of a green macaw and a mandrill within the collection. Federal officials confirmed that at least 35 of the specimens are classified as endangered under Mexican environmental law, including Mexican spider monkeys, jaguars, an ocelot, a green macaw, and American bison. The seizure highlights the convergence of industrial-scale fuel theft—known locally as huachicol—and the illicit exotic animal trade in northern Mexico. According to CBS News, quoting U.S. Treasury assessments, fuel theft has surged to become the second most profitable revenue stream for Mexican cartels, trailing only drug trafficking. Criminal organizations siphon crude oil and gasoline from Pemex infrastructure through internal bribery, tapped pipelines, and hijacked tanker trucks. The illicit fuel is subsequently laundered and sold across domestic and international markets.
