102-Point Lead: Kimi Antonelli Eyes F1 Title at US GP, skysports.com reports

102-Point Lead: Kimi Antonelli Eyes F1 Title at US GP, skysports.com reports

October 11, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Kimi Antonelli can become Formula 1’s youngest world champion as early as October 25 at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, holding a season-high 102-point lead at the top of the Drivers’ Championship, skysports.com reported. Heading into the final stretch of the 2026 season with six races remaining, the Mercedes driver sits on the cusp of history in just his second year in the sport.

Antonelli Needs 23 More Points to Secure Title in Austin

Antonelli expanded his margin in the standings following a third-place finish at the Singapore Grand Prix. With five races scheduled after Austin—including Mexico, Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi—a maximum of 125 points remains available for the rest of the grid.

To secure the world title at Circuit of the Americas, Antonelli must increase his championship advantage by 23 points. Skysports.com outlined the exact race permutations required for the Italian driver to clinch the crown on October 25: Antonelli must win the grand prix while teammate George Russell finishes ninth or lower, and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton finishes fifth or lower.

A victory for Antonelli would mark his ninth win of the 2026 season. Even if Russell finished ninth—which would leave both drivers tied with a 125-point gap and 125 points left on the table—Antonelli would win the title on countback. Russell, holding three wins on the year, could only reach a maximum of eight victories across the remaining rounds, handing the tiebreaker to the Mercedes sophomore.

Challengers Falling Out of Mathematical Contention

Behind the leading Mercedes pair, the battle for podium positions shifted dramatically in Singapore. George Russell maintained second place in the standings despite a ninth-place finish after engine penalties had left him starting at the back of the grid, though the weekend dropped him more than 100 points behind his teammate for the first time. Meanwhile, a late slide off the podium dropped Lewis Hamilton to third place in the drivers’ standings, leaving the Ferrari driver 111 points off the pace.

Max Verstappen sits 119 points behind the leader, Charles Leclerc trails by 125 points, and Lando Norris is 139 points back. Skysports.com confirmed that an Antonelli victory in Austin would automatically eliminate Verstappen, Leclerc, and Norris from mathematical title contention regardless of where they finish the race.

Maintaining Focus Ahead of the Americas Triple Header

Despite the historic stakes, Antonelli emphasized that his approach remains unchanged as Formula 1 prepares for the upcoming triple header in the Americas. Speaking to media outlets after the race in Singapore, the 20-year-old acknowledged the proximity of the championship but pointed directly to his on-track execution.

I know it’s very close, I know it’s there, but I just need to make sure that I keep doing the best I can. The mindset is always the same, to go out there and win and perform the best way I can.

Antonelli added that his performance in Singapore left room for improvement, noting that a week to reset is necessary before heading to Austin. Toto Wolff also addressed media scrutiny regarding intra-team dynamics, pushing back against accusations that the constructor favors Antonelli over Russell.

The United States Grand Prix takes place from October 23 to 25 at Circuit of the Americas, marking the first opportunity for the sport to crown a new, younger successor to Sebastian Vettel in the record books.
