Fatal Crash Shuts Down Lougheed Highway
A single-vehicle collision in Maple Ridge early Friday morning resulted in one fatality and the closure of a major highway. The incident prompted an extensive investigation and traffic disruptions for several hours.
Investigation Underway
Around 3 a.m., emergency services responded to a crash at the intersection of 240 Street and Lougheed Highway. Ridge Meadows RCMP confirmed that only one vehicle was involved, and tragically, one person died at the scene. “The Serious Crimes Unit (SCU) and the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Team (ICARS) were called out to assist with the investigation,”
the Ridge Meadows RCMP stated.
Traffic Disrupted
The Lougheed Highway faced closures to eastbound traffic between 287 Street and Haney Bypass for a significant portion of the morning. DriveBC reported that single lanes reopened in both directions around 11 a.m. By 12:30 p.m., all lanes were open to traffic. The closure impacted commuters. According to the Ministry of Transportation, crashes are a leading cause of unexpected congestion, accounting for 25% of incidents (TranBC 2019).
