Xbox Series X/S Gains Expanded Groups, Custom UI & Flexible Quick Resume

Xbox players are poised to receive a significant software update bringing long-requested features to Microsoft’s current-generation consoles, the Series X and Series S. The update, currently being tested with Xbox Insiders, will expand customization options and refine core functionality, according to a report released Friday.

Among the most anticipated changes is an increase to the number of game groupings available within the Xbox dashboard. Users previously were limited to two groups for organizing their game libraries; the update will raise that limit to ten, allowing for more detailed categorization. Microsoft stated the management of these groups will mirror the reordering system already in place on the Home screen, streamlining the user experience.

Beyond organization, the update introduces a comprehensive color customization system. Players will gain access to hue, saturation, and brightness sliders, enabling them to create personalized color schemes for the Xbox interface, extending to the Xbox Guide. The customization options are accessible through Settings > General > Personalization > Customize the guide.

A major improvement targets the Quick Resume feature, which allows players to instantly return to suspended games. While lauded for its convenience, Quick Resume has historically encountered issues with certain multiplayer titles, such as Fortnite. The update will allow users to enable or disable Quick Resume on a per-game basis, providing greater control over the feature’s functionality. This setting can be adjusted via the Manage game and add-ons menu, accessible by pressing the menu button on a game tile.

The Xbox Series X, launched in November 2020, is currently available in multiple configurations, including a standard 1TB model with a disc drive, a 1TB all-digital edition, and a 2TB version with a disc drive, according to Microsoft’s website. The console currently retails for $649.99 for the standard 1TB model, and $599.99 for the digital-only version, with special editions available for $799.99. Certified refurbished models are also available at reduced prices, starting at $499.99.

Microsoft has indicated that further updates addressing user feedback are planned throughout the year. The initial rollout of these features will be limited to members of the Xbox Insider program, with a wider release scheduled for a later date.
