WhatsApp Implements Message Limits to Combat spam & Scams
WhatsApp is proactively tackling the growing problem of spam and scam messages with a new feature limiting the number of messages an account can send to recipients who haven’t responded. The move, first reported by TechCrunch on October 17, 2025, represents a important shift towards automated spam prevention.
The system tracks messages sent to users who don’t reply, with even multiple unread messages to the same contact counting towards the limit. This targets high-volume senders - including businesses and potential attackers contacting unknown numbers – though WhatsApp states the average user is unlikely to be affected.
While specific monthly thresholds haven’t been publicly released, WhatsApp will warn accounts nearing the cap. Replies from recipients reset the message count.
This new feature builds on Meta’s existing anti-spam efforts, including adjustments to WhatsApp Business pricing in the previous year aimed at discouraging excessive marketing messages. Other recent additions include alerts when unknown numbers add users to group chats and the ability to unsubscribe from marketing broadcasts, all designed to give users greater control over their inbox.
Meta confirmed the feature will roll out across multiple countries in the coming weeks.
