Public Health isle of man Alerts Residents to Increase in Diarrhoea and Vomiting Cases
Douglas, Isle of Man – December 7, 2025 – Public Health Isle of Man has issued a health alert today, confirming a rise in cases of diarrhoea and vomiting (D&V) circulating on teh Island. While typically caused by common stomach viruses, officials are urging residents to take preventative measures to limit spread and manage symptoms effectively.
The increase in D&V cases, tho generally mild and self-limiting, has prompted the advisory to protect vulnerable populations and prevent potential strain on healthcare resources. Most individuals experience a relatively short duration of illness, typically resolving within a few days. However, specific groups – including infants, young children, and those experiencing dehydration – require heightened attention and may necessitate medical intervention.
Public Health advises anyone experiencing symptoms of D&V to remain at home to prevent further transmission. A crucial guideline is to adhere to the 48-hour symptom-free rule before returning to work or school. Maintaining diligent hand hygiene and staying adequately hydrated are also strongly recommended for those affected.
Residents should seek immediate medical attention if they observe any of the following: concern regarding an infant under 12 months of age; a child ceasing breast or bottle feeding during illness; signs of dehydration in children under five, such as a reduction in wet nappies; persistent dehydration despite using oral rehydration solutions in themselves or children over five; inability to keep fluids down due to continued vomiting; bloody diarrhoea or rectal bleeding; or diarrhoea lasting longer than seven days, or vomiting exceeding two days in duration.
Further information and guidance on managing D&V can be found on the Public Health Isle of Man website: https://publichealth.gov.im/infectious-disease/diarrhoea-and-vomiting/.
