Spotify Finally Delivers: Lossless Audio Now Available to Premium Subscribers – At No Extra Cost
After years of anticipation, Spotify has officially launched lossless audio streaming to Premium subscribers in key markets, including the US, UK, Germany, Japan, Australia, Denmark, the netherlands, and Sweden. The long-awaited feature, first announced almost five years ago, promises a significantly improved listening experience without requiring users to upgrade to a new plan.
Spotify highlighted the demand for lossless audio in a recent blog post, acknowledging it as one of the platform’s most requested features. And the best part? Unlike initial reports suggesting a paid “Music Pro” add-on, the higher fidelity streaming is included as part of the standard €12.99/month Premium subscription.
what to Expect: CD-Quality and Beyond
Spotify’s lossless streams are delivered in the 24-bit,44.1 kHz FLAC format – a quality level exceeding that of a standard CD. The company states that the vast majority of its catalog will support this enhanced audio quality.
To truly experience the benefits, Spotify recommends connecting via Wi-Fi and using wired headphones, or utilizing Spotify connect compatible devices like speakers and TVs from brands such as Sony, Samsung, Bose, and Sennheiser. Support for Amazon and Sonos devices is slated for release in October.
It’s important to note that Bluetooth connections may still compress the audio due to bandwidth limitations. The feature is currently available across smartphones, tablets, desktops, and laptops.
Managing Data and Storage
Lossless audio naturally consumes more data and storage space. Spotify addresses this by maintaining its existing audio quality settings (Low, Normal, High, Very High) and adding a new “Lossless” option. Users can customize their preferred quality for Wi-Fi, mobile data, and downloads within the app settings.
