Montgomery, alabama – Two people were killed and 14 others wounded in a mass shooting that unfolded near downtown Montgomery late Saturday night, October 5, 2025, police reported. The gunfire erupted around 11:31 p.m. at the intersection of Bibbs and Commerce streets, less then a mile west of the Alabama State Capitol building.
The shooting occurred as a group had gathered at the intersection, and quickly escalated after an initial exchange of gunfire. The incident underscores the ongoing challenge of gun violence in American cities and raises questions about public safety in state capitals. Authorities are actively investigating and seeking facts from the public as they work to identify and apprehend those responsible.
Police identified the victims as 17-year-old Jeremiah Morris and 43-year-old Sholanda Williams.Preliminary investigations suggest the shooting began when an individual targeted in the incident returned fire, after which multiple people in the crowd also began shooting, according to Police Chief Graboys. At least two of those injured were armed at the time of the shooting.
Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed stated the shooting stemmed from a “disagreement that could have been avoided,” but did not provide further details. A $50,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators.
Detectives are currently interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage to identify suspects. No arrests have been announced as of Sunday morning.
The Montgomery Police Department is urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact investigators promptly.
