Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 PSVR2 Mode Inspired by Gran Turismo 7

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is set to receive a PlayStation VR2 update in early 2026, bringing a novel level of immersion to the popular simulation title on the PS5. The announcement, made by PlayStation, follows the game’s launch on PS5 in December 2025 and builds on the existing support for PC VR through the original Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Asobo Studio, the developer behind Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, has been working to adapt the game specifically for the PSVR2 headset, drawing inspiration from the implementation in Gran Turismo 7, according to a post on the PlayStation Blog. The development team has focused on optimizing each cockpit for the headset, recognizing the unique layout of controls and instruments across the game’s 125 available aircraft, ranging from rotorcraft to business jets.

Performance optimization is a key focus for the VR update. Asobo Studio is utilizing foveated rendering, a technique that concentrates the PS5’s processing power on the area of the screen the player is directly looking at. This allows for higher visual fidelity where it matters most even as reducing the strain on the system’s resources in peripheral vision. Jorg Neumann, franchise boss, explained to XDA that maintaining a stable frame rate, ideally 60fps with dual rendering, is crucial for a comfortable VR experience, with a minimum target of 48fps.

While an early build of the PSVR2 mode has been described as “fun and looks amazing,” Asobo Studio opted to delay its release alongside the initial PS5 launch to allow for further refinement. The team considered releasing the feature as a beta but ultimately decided to dedicate more time to optimization, ensuring a polished experience for players. The PS5 version of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 already incorporates features leveraging the DualSense controller, including adaptive triggers that simulate control resistance and air traffic control communications through the controller’s speaker, as well as gyro controls and lightbar support.

The arrival of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on PS5 marks a significant step in Microsoft’s broader cross-platform strategy, bringing a formerly exclusive Xbox title to a new audience. The game launched on Xbox Series X|S and PC last year and features a career mode with activities like remote cargo operations and aerial firefighting. Pre-orders for the Deluxe, Premium Deluxe, and Aviator Editions of the PS5 game include early access starting December 3rd.
