Igus Launches Affordable 7th Axis for Lightweight Robots, Expanding Workspace for Under €5,000
COLOGNE, GERMANY – Industrial automation specialist igus has introduced a new 7th axis solution designed to considerably expand the working range of lightweight robots, and crucially, at a price point starting under €5,000 (net). The system aims to solve a common pain point for companies integrating linear axes with robot controls, offering a plug-and-play solution that reduces development time and costs.
Many companies are looking to increase the workspace of their lightweight joint-arm robots, but often struggle with seamlessly connecting a linear axis to the existing robot control system. Igus’s new 7th axis directly addresses this challenge, quadrupling the workspace and integrating directly into the control via a dedicated software plugin. According to igus, 500 systems are already deployed globally.
“We have heard from many companies that the elaborate connection of a 7th axis is currently a Pain-point that makes projects unnecessarily complex,” says Alexander Mühlens, authorized representative and head of low-cost automation at igus.
The new software plugin supports controls from major manufacturers including Epson, Dobot, Igus, Omron, Universal Robots (UR20/UR30), and the FANUC CRX series. Early adopters are reporting savings of up to €10,000 in development costs thanks to the “plug-to-program” principle. The control automatically recognizes the axis after installation, allowing programming and operation through the robot’s standard teach pendant.Safety features, including emergency off relays, are pre-integrated,eliminating the need for additional engineering.
How it Works:
The system is built around an aluminum rail up to 6,000 mm long, with a sled sliding on four bearings made of igus’s lubricating-free plastic. It utilizes a timing belt drive reaching speeds of up to 0.6 m/s with a positioning accuracy of ± 0.3 mm. Adapter kits are available to mount robots from various manufacturers onto the sled, and energy chains protect cables during movement. igus emphasizes the importance of cable management, noting that approximately 35% of robot failures are attributed to issues in this area.
Pricing & Availability:
The 7th axis is available starting at €2,313 (net), including the rail, sled, and drive. Control cabinet integration adds an additional €2,800. The system boasts a payload capacity of up to 55 kg and a lifting path of up to 6,000 mm, depending on the configuration.Adapter kits for other robot manufacturers are available, and a configurator provides detailed specifications.
