Google Pixel: Hidden Double-Tap Trick You Need to Know

Google Pixel owners have discovered a little-known feature that allows users to trigger actions on their phones with a simple double-tap on the back of the device. The functionality, available since Android 11, has remained largely under the radar despite its potential to streamline common tasks.

The March 2026 Pixel Drop, which included updates to Circle to Search, Gemini integration, and Pixel Watch capabilities, also highlighted existing, less-publicized features like this gesture control. While the Pixel Drop introduced new personalization options like customizable icons and an improved Now Playing tool, the double-tap function offers a different kind of customization – a physical shortcut to digital actions.

Currently, a double-tap on the back of a Pixel phone can be programmed to perform a variety of functions, including taking a screenshot, accessing the digital assistant, controlling media playback (play/pause), viewing recent apps, displaying notifications, toggling the flashlight, or launching a specific application. Users report the feature is particularly useful for quickly pausing music or taking screenshots without needing to locate buttons or navigate the interface.

To activate the double-tap gesture, Pixel users must navigate to the phone’s settings. The process involves going to Settings, then System, then Gestes, and finally selecting “Double tap to start actions.” A toggle switch enables the feature, and a subsequent menu allows users to choose the desired action. A setting to require “stronger taps” is also available, designed to prevent accidental activations.

The feature’s existence was confirmed by Google in blog posts detailing the March Pixel Drop, alongside announcements of Gemini’s expanded capabilities within apps and the introduction of Magic Cue for restaurant recommendations. The Pixel Drop, as described by Google, aims to deliver “intuitive and personal features” to users, and the double-tap gesture aligns with that goal by offering a customizable and convenient interaction method.

Google’s Pixel phones are available through the Google Store, Best Buy, and Amazon, with the latest models including the Pixel 10a, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The Pixel 10a, released in 2026, includes features like 7 years of Pixel Drops, a 30+ hour battery life, and the Camera Coach feature powered by Gemini.
