“Boston Blue” Creators Detail Danny & Baez‘s Connection, Sean‘s Recast & “Blue Bloods” Surprises
CBS’s new drama, “Boston Blue,” a spinoff of “Blue Bloods,” brings Donnie Wahlberg’s Detective Danny Reagan to Boston to check on his son, Sean, after a shooting. The series introduces a new, prominent family in Boston’s justice system – the Silvers - and delivers a surprising connection to Danny’s past.
The premiere sees Danny arriving in Massachusetts as Sean (played by Mika Amonsen, “The Republic of Sarah”) recovers in a hospital. Together, Danny investigates the circumstances surrounding the incident that left his son in a coma. He’s joined by a familiar face: Detective Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez, “Blue Bloods”), appearing in Wahlberg’s first scene, confirming a romantic relationship beyond their professional partnership.
“Boston Blue” establishes the Silvers as deeply involved in Boston’s legal landscape. Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green, “Star Trek: Discovery”) partners with Danny, while her sister, Police Superintendent Sarah Silver (Maggie Lawson, “Psych”), leads the department. Their younger brother, Officer Jonah Silver (Marcus Scribner, “black-ish”), is a colleague and friend of Sean. Rounding out the family are Boston district Attorney mae Silver (Gloria reuben, “ER”) and her father, Rev. Edwin peters (Ernie Hudson, “Quantum Leap”), a Baptist minister who holds a significant role following the death of Ben, Sarah and Jonah’s father and Lena’s stepfather – a circuit judge killed a year prior to the pilot’s events.
The decision to recast the role of Sean was addressed by co-creators Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis. The show also featured a guest appearance from Bridget Moynahan as Erin Reagan, who travels from New York to support her brother and nephew.
Sonnier and Margolis are discussing the impact of the Baez cameo, the reasoning behind the Sean recast, the show’s focus on family dynamics, and the extent of appearances from other “Blue Bloods” characters in the spinoff’s debut episode.
