Woman in Tripura Dies by Suicide Amidst Microfinance Debt
Kailashahar, Unakoti District, December 6, 2025 – A woman in East Kaulikura village, Unakoti District, Tripura, has died by suicide, reportedly due to mounting debt from multiple microfinance loans. The incident has deeply saddened the local community.
Anjana Malakar,a 30-year-old resident of Ward No. 3, Kaulikura Gram Panchayat, Gournagar Block, was found deceased Saturday morning. According to police reports, she had been missing since Friday afternoon around 4:00 PM. Villagers discovered her body hanging from a tree in a nearby forest and immediatly alerted the Kailashahar Women Police Station.
Anjana and her husband, Parimal Malakar, both worked as daily wage labourers and faced critically important financial hardship. Officer pratibha Sinha of the Kailashahar Women Police Station confirmed that Anjana had borrowed from several microfinance institutions and struggled to keep up with repayments.
Local sources indicate Anjana had loans from at least three organizations, including Bandhan and bharat. While she consistently made payments when employed, prolonged periods of unemployment made it increasingly difficult to meet the demands of loan recovery agents who regularly visited their home.
Following the discovery of her body, police recovered it and transported it to Unakoti District Hospital for a post-mortem examination. An examination is underway. Parimal Malakar had searched for his wife amongst relatives and neighbours on Friday before the body was discovered.
The tragedy highlights the vulnerability of impoverished families to the pressures of microfinance debt in areas with limited employment opportunities.
