Zverev Returns to German Davis Cup Team for Bologna Finals

BOLOGNA,ITALY – In a boost for Germany‘s Davis Cup hopes,Tokyo Olympic champion Alexander Zverev has been ‍named to the team competing in the prestigious team competition in Bologna,marking his first appearance as February ⁢2023. The German​ squad, captained by Michael​ Kohlmann, will face Argentina in the quarter-finals, November 18th to 23rd.

Zverev’s⁤ inclusion alongside Jan-Lennard Struff, yannick‍ Hanfmann, and the doubles pairing of Kevin Krawietz and Tim ⁢Pütz, adds significant firepower to a team that qualified for the finals with victories over Israel and Japan. “I’m very happy that Sascha‍ is part of the team again and will be competing for us in the finals for the first time.His return gives us additional quality at the highest level, makes us even more difficult for any opponent to ‌predict and thus increases our chances of progressing,”⁣ Kohlmann stated.

The Davis Cup is an international team event in men’s tennis,often described ⁤as the “World Cup of Tennis.” Germany has a strong ‌history in the competition,⁣ having ​won the title 13 times, though their ‌last victory‍ dates back to 1993.

Zverev,⁣ who last represented Germany against Switzerland⁣ over two years ago, is currently preparing for the ATP Finals in Turin (November 9th to 16th) before joining‍ the team in Italy.‍ Despite a challenging season marked by physical setbacks,Zverev expressed his determination,recently telling Bild am Sonntag,”This year is ‌simply tough – as soon as you have the feeling that you are playing good tennis,the⁣ next setback comes.”

Kohlmann emphasized the team’s cohesion and confidence heading into the competition. “The boys showed against israel ​and Japan what quality they always⁢ bring to the​ pitch for Germany and therefore‌ deserve to continue this trip together to Bologna,” he said. ⁣”We ⁢know that Argentina is a very⁢ unpleasant opponent is, but we are‌ going ‌to Italy with great self-confidence and clear objectives.”
