Ubatuba to Hold Rabies Vaccination Drive in Sertão do Ubatumirim Next Wednesday
UBATUBA, SP – Residents of Sertão do Ubatumirim will have access to free rabies vaccinations for their dogs and cats next Wednesday, October 15th, as part of Ubatuba’s ongoing decentralized vaccination schedule. The drive will take place from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM next to the neighborhood Health Center.
The Ubatuba Zoonoses Surveillance Unit has been conducting these neighborhood vaccination events on Wednesdays, recently vaccinating 35 animals - 10 cats and 25 dogs – at the Association of Remnants of the Quilombo de Caçandoca Community on October 8th.
In addition to the neighborhood drives, a fixed vaccination station operates every Tuesday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Praça Capricornio, near the skate park on Avenida Iperoig. This central location has already immunized 54 animals – 31 dogs and 23 cats – since launching on September 30th.
City officials emphasize that prior scheduling is mandatory for both the decentralized drives and the fixed station. Appointments can be made by calling (12) 3834-2323, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This pre-booking system is in place to ensure organized service and avoid large gatherings.
Owners are reminded to bring dogs on leashes/collars and cats in carriers. Maintaining distance between animals and minimizing noise are also recommended, notably for cats who require a calm surroundings during vaccination.
The annual rabies vaccination campaign is critical in São Paulo state, where the virus primarily circulates through bats. While the last confirmed case of canine rabies was in 1998, a recent case in São Paulo city in 2023 involving a dog infected with a wild variant underscores the importance of continued vigilance and immunization efforts.
