New Zealand Lion Sanctuary Euthanizes Two Lions, Future of Others Uncertain
A wildlife sanctuary in New Zealand has euthanized two lions due to untreatable health conditions, with the fate of the remaining five lions hanging in the balance.the sanctuary’s operator, janette Vallance, confirmed the deaths of Imvula and Sibili on Thursday, stating the decisions were made “with deep care and consideration.”
The sanctuary is facing closure after going into liquidation in 2023, and vallance indicated there were “no real options left.” While potential buyers have expressed interest in continuing the facility as a lion park, this would require both land purchase and substantial investment.
Relocation of the lions was deemed “not a viable or humane option” due to their age, the number of animals, and their complex care requirements. However, Vallance stated a “glimmer of hope” exists, as discussions are underway with potential purchasers.
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) confirmed the decision to euthanize rests with the sanctuary owners, but an animal welfare inspector will be present to ensure the process is carried out humanely and in accordance with animal welfare law. Deputy Director General of biosecurity New Zealand, Stuart Anderson, stated MPI is “satisfied that the operation continues to meet its animal welfare and containment obligations.”
The sanctuary gained notoriety in the early 2000s through its appearance on a television show featuring Craig “the Lion Man” Busch. However, it has faced a history of financial difficulties, ownership changes, and safety concerns, including the 2009 mauling death of a handler by a white tiger and a 2014 closure order from MPI requiring enclosure upgrades before reopening in 2021.
Vallance reported receiving both supportive messages and threatening comments amid the crisis. Bolton Equities, the landowner, declined to comment.
