Jolla Launches Crowdfunding Campaign for New Linux smartphone
Helsinki, Finland – Finnish mobile company jolla has begun accepting pre-orders for a new smartphone running Sailfish OS, an autonomous Linux-based operating system. the project is being funded through a crowdfunding campaign with a goal of 2,000 units ordered by January 4th. As of today,the campaign has already secured 1,721 pre-orders.
Jolla initially emerged 14 years ago, building upon the foundation of Nokia’s abandoned MeeGo project. The company released its first smartphone in 2013 following a triumphant crowdfunding effort, but afterward shifted its focus to licensing Sailfish OS for use on existing devices from manufacturers like Sony, OnePlus, Samsung, Google, and xiaomi.
The new Jolla Phone boasts a Mediatek 5G SoC, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage expandable up to 2TB via microSDXC. It features a 6.36-inch FullHD AMOLED display (~390ppi) with a 20:9 aspect ratio and Gorilla glass protection, alongside a user-replaceable 5,500mAh battery. Connectivity includes 4G/5G dual nano-SIM support, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, and NFC.
Camera specifications include a 50MP Wide and 13MP Ultrawide rear camera setup, and a front-facing wide-lens selfie camera. Additional features include a fingerprint reader integrated into the power key,a user-changeable back cover,an RGB indication LED,and a configurable physical Privacy Switch allowing users to disable the microphone,Bluetooth,Android apps,or other functions.
The device will be available in Snow White, Kaamos Black, and The Orange. Jolla states that the phone’s specifications were resolute through votes from the Sailfish OS community over the past several months.
Manufactured and sold in Europe, the Jolla Phone is designed for global compatibility, with cellular band configurations intended to support roaming on networks including those in the U.S. Initial sales markets include the EU, the UK, switzerland, and Norway. Jolla promises a minimum of 5 years of software support, with a commitment to user privacy through no tracking, no “calling home,” and no hidden analytics.
Pre-order vouchers are currently priced at 499€, discounted from the anticipated retail price of 599€ to 699€. Estimated delivery is scheduled for the first half of 2026.
