NAPLES, Italy (AP) – A Champions League match between Napoli and Sporting Lisbon was preceded by violent clashes Wednesday, resulting in the hospitalization of one Portuguese fan and the arrest of two Napoli supporters.
The confrontations unfolded in Naples city center before the game at Stadio Diego Maradona, according to reports from Gazzetta dello Sport. Napoli fans reportedly initiated an attack on Sporting fans at a restaurant, causing property damage and sending furniture flying. Police are currently seeking up to seven additional individuals believed to have participated in the unrest.
This incident marks Napoli’s first home Champions League contest as facing Barcelona in the 2023-24 round of 16.The match itself followed a challenging start to the competition for both teams: Napoli suffered a 2-0 defeat at Manchester City, while Sporting lisbon secured a 4-1 victory against Kairat.
Authorities continue to investigate the events, aiming to identify and apprehend all those involved in the pre-match violence. The clashes underscore the ongoing challenges of maintaining order and safety during high-profile international sporting events.
