RIO DE JANEIRO – Brazilian comedy star Ingrid Guimarães is set to star in her first dramatic role in “Minha Criança Trans?” a film based on the experiences of Thamirys Nunes raising a transgender child. Vitrine Filmes, the major autonomous distributor behind “The Secret Agent,” will handle Brazilian distribution and co-invest in the project’s progress.
Guimarães,who holds the record for the highest national box office earnings of any actor in brazil over the past decade with over R$23 million (US$4.2 million), is known for her work in comedies like the “Head Over heels” franchise and “A Boyfriend For My Wife.” She is currently filming the Amazon-set comedy “Pé no Chão” for Prime Video Brazil.
Written by Nunes, the film is inspired by her personal journey and the creation of her NGO dedicated to supporting families raising trans children.The story recounts Nunes’ experiences navigating legal and social challenges while discovering her child’s transgender identity, and emphasizes a journey of acceptance and family transformation.
“Bringing it to the screen is both an artistic challenge and a deeply personal mission,” Guimarães told Variety. “It’s my first drama on screen, inspired by something so true, as it is the story of Thamirys.” she added that the film is a “powerful reminder that love transcends labels” and will offer “a fresh and heroic cinematic viewpoint on gender identity and family.”
Vitrine Filmes director Letícia Friedrich stated the company is “proud to be developing a film that will spark important conversations in Brazil and beyond,” emphasizing their belief in “the power of cinema to spark empathy and drive social change.”
Producers from Matizar Filmes, Juliana Coelho and Mariana ferraz, expressed their excitement about Guimarães’s career shift. Coelho said it’s an “honor” to produce Guimarães’ first dramatic role, noting she “will move audiences as a mother who, out of love, must reinvent herself.” Ferraz added the film “explores motherhood, listening, and acceptance with sensitivity and strength, inviting viewers to follow an intimate and transformative journey.”
