HD Hyundai heavy Industries (HHI) and Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) have joined forces to compete for a ample contract to design and build next-generation logistics support vessels for the U.S. Navy. The partnership leverages HHI’s shipbuilding expertise and HII’s established presence as a major U.S. defense contractor.
This alliance is strategically timed to address the Navy’s aspiring fleet expansion goals and critical logistical needs. The Navy intends to grow its fleet from 296 ships currently to 381 by 2054, a plan heavily reliant on robust logistical support. These new vessels will be vital for sustaining prolonged naval operations by providing essential supplies – fuel, ammunition, and provisions – to deployed combat groups. The potential market for these ships is estimated at $30 billion annually, representing a meaningful opportunity for both companies.
the collaboration is part of the Navy’s Next Generation Logistics (NGLS) programme,a framework designed to modernize its support capabilities. By combining HHI’s advanced shipbuilding technologies with HII’s understanding of U.S. navy requirements, the partnership aims to deliver a cutting-edge solution. This venture also underscores the strengthening strategic ties between South Korea and the United States amid increasing geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific region.
