Dropkick Murphys Foresee Economic Collapse,Continue Political Activism Despite Backlash
BOSTON,MA – Dropkick Murphys, the iconic Boston punk band, are bracing for what thay believe is an impending economic crisis in the United States, while simultaneously facing increased scrutiny and negative attention for their outspoken anti-Trump stance.Lead singer Ken Casey predicts, “within a year, this country’s gonna fall on its face, and people are gonna feel the pain: recession, inflation, unemployment. There’s nobody coming to save us.”
The band’s willingness to engage in politically charged commentary sets them apart in a music landscape where many artists remain silent, notably within the punk rock scene. Casey laments the shift, questioning, ”where’d everyone go? They had the balls to speak out against Bush back in the day. But Bush didn’t have an army of trolls that come after you. Speaking out against Bush wasn’t going to cost you half yoru fanbase, potentially.” Unlike many of their peers, Dropkick Murphys operate independently, stating, “Unlike Stephen, we have no parent company, so we can say what we want.”
this commitment to speaking out has resonated with fans, including immigrants facing uncertainty under the current political climate. Casey recounts a recent encounter with a fan who shared, “I moved here, and my partner is American, we have children, and I live in fear of being deported. My own friends have turned on me, they say I’m taking American jobs.” The fan, moved to tears, told Casey, “I feel like someone is speaking on my behalf.”
Despite the potential cost – including a loss of fans and increased negative attention – the band remains resolute.”We’re sticking our neck out and getting a lot of negative attention,” Casey acknowledges. “But if we don’t do it now, it might be too late.”
Dropkick Murphys’ latest album, For the People, is out now on Dummy Luck Music/PIAS.The band’s European tour begins October 15th at Alcatraz in Milan.
