The Pitt Season 2: ICE at the ER & Hospital Raids

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents appeared in a recent episode of the HBO Max drama “The Pitt,” depicting a scenario mirroring real-life encounters occurring in emergency rooms across the United States, including California. The episode, titled “5:00 p.m.” and airing Thursday, featured agents bringing a detainee into the hospital for treatment of a shoulder injury.

The storyline unfolded with ICE agents arriving with limited information about the patient’s condition, stating only that she had fallen, according to reports. The presence of the agents created a palpable sense of unease among both patients and medical staff, prompting some to leave the emergency room. “The Pitt” creator R. Scott Gemmill had previously indicated the season would address the issue of ICE activity in healthcare settings, and acknowledged discussions with HBO regarding the episode’s portrayal.

During the episode, Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, portrayed by Noah Wyle, attempted to expedite the patient’s treatment to facilitate her transfer back to ICE custody. Although, the situation escalated when the agents became more assertive, physically grabbing the patient despite her injury. Nurse Jesse intervened, attempting to protect the patient from what he perceived as aggressive handling by the agents, and was subsequently detained.

The episode’s depiction of ICE activity has sparked debate, with some viewers praising the show for addressing the issue, while others criticized it for being too restrained in its portrayal of a potentially confrontational situation. The storyline reflects a growing national conversation regarding ICE’s tactics and their impact on healthcare facilities. ICE has faced scrutiny since the beginning of President Trump’s second term, and the agency’s actions continue to be a point of contention.

Gemmill revealed that the episode was designed to mirror real-world events, drawing parallels to a previous storyline involving a measles outbreak that coincided with an actual increase in cases across the U.S. The show’s producers regularly consult with experts to ensure accuracy in their depiction of issues facing healthcare workers. The episode concluded with Nurse Jesse’s detention, leaving his fate unresolved.
