Ethan Quinn upset former finalist Casper Ruud in the second round of the Miami Open on Friday, continuing a day of surprising results at the tournament. The American defeated Ruud 4-6, 7-6, advancing to his first ATP Masters 1000 third round.
The match was part of a series of unexpected outcomes on Friday, with Britain’s Jack Draper similarly falling to Reilly Opelka. Ruud, who had seven opportunities to close out the second set, ultimately succumbed to Quinn’s consistent play. Quinn has now won seven consecutive matches and will face Jiri Lehecka or Moise Kouame in the next round, according to the ATP Tour website.
The upset comes as Ruud continues to struggle with his form early in the 2026 season, bringing his record to 7-7 for the year. Meanwhile, Maria Sakkari also experienced an early exit, losing to Alycia Parks 6-3, 6-3. Parks will now face either Coco Gauff or Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
Elsewhere, Amanda Anisimova overcame a tough challenge from Ajla Tomljanović, winning 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 in a match lasting nearly two hours.
In other tournament news, Polish player Maks Kaśnikowski advanced to the semi-finals of a Challenger event in Badalon, defeating Carles Cordoba 6-0, 6-3. Play in Miami was briefly delayed due to rain, but resumed with sunshine, according to tournament officials.
Iga Świątek’s early exit in Miami continues a trend of inconsistent results for the Polish star. This marks the second consecutive season where she has not won a tournament in the first three months of the year, and the first since 2020 that she hasn’t reached a semi-final during that period.
Magda Linette, who defeated Świątek in the second round, received a congratulatory message from Novak Djokovic following her win, according to Kouame. Świątek herself acknowledged a loss of confidence after the match, stating, “I lost my confidence. I think too much, I’m confused.”
Filip Peliwo was forced to retire from his quarter-final match in Ma’anshan due to injury, while Kamil Majchrzak secured a victory over Miomir Kecmanović 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, earning him a spot in the second round against Learner Tien.
Linette’s victory over Świątek was a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 decision, setting up a third-round match against Alexandra Eala.
