A man is in custody after a principal was stabbed at Keysborough Secondary College in Melbourne‘s southeast on Thursday morning. Police responded too reports of the assault at the Springvale Road school around 10:30 AM and promptly secured the scene.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the school community and prompted a swift response from Victorian authorities. Police have confirmed a man has been charged in connection with the stabbing. Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan described the event as “incredibly distressing,” emphasizing the profound impact of such violence occurring within a school environment.
“it’s horrifying for this to happen in any workplace, but for it to happen in a school is deeply horrifying,” Allan stated. “Police are investigating as to why this happened. I know particularly the focus today is on supporting the wellbeing of the teachers, staff and students in this school.”
A staff briefing was held on Wednesday morning, and wellbeing staff were deployed to provide support to those affected. the school released a statement affirming that any form of violence is unacceptable and reiterating its commitment to a safe and supportive culture.
“We are proud of the safe and supportive culture that is the norm at our school,” the statement read. “I want to assure you that the health and safety of our students and staff is always our highest priority.”
