Donald Trump and Xi Jinping spoke by phone Friday, discussing several key issues including trade, fentanyl, the war in ukraine, and the ongoing negotiations surrounding TikTok. following the call, Trump stated via his Truth Social network that “progress” had been made on the TikTok file, acknowledging his chinese counterpart’s role in the discussions.
The conversation comes after trump indicated his desire to “finalize” the sale of tiktok’s U.S. operations to a consortium of American investors. he described the call as “very productive.”
While Trump highlighted progress, Xi Jinping urged the U.S. to avoid “unilateral” commercial restrictions and maintain an “open, fair and non-discriminatory” business habitat for Chinese companies, including TikTok. The Chinese leader characterized the call as “constructive.”
The two leaders agreed to meet in person on the sidelines of the APEC summit in South Korea, scheduled for October 31st and November 1st.They also plan to continue discussions via phone. Trump further stated he intends to visit China “early next year,” with Xi Jinping reciprocating with a visit to the United States “at a suitable time.”
This phone call marks the second between the two leaders as Trump’s inauguration on January 20th, and the third this year, following a previous call on January 17th.
Reports suggest a potential buyer consortium includes tech giant Oracle, and Californian investment funds Silver Lake and Andreessen Horowitz. Trump has also moved to reject a previously planned ban on TikTok in the United States, a measure initially slated for January and enacted during the administration of Joe Biden, citing national security concerns.
Trump has previously acknowledged that TikTok played a role in boosting his popularity, especially among young Americans, during his last presidential campaign.
