A new online quiz challenges television viewers to identify classic sitcoms from blurred screenshots, prompting a debate about the enduring appeal of the genre and the criteria for defining a “true” sitcom fan.
The quiz, created by Abby Zinman and published on BuzzFeed on December 16, 2025, presents users with obscured images from popular sitcoms and asks them to name the demonstrate. Zinman, in the quiz’s introduction, asserts that sitcoms are “probably the greatest kind of TV show ever,” citing their blend of “lovable, complex characters; interesting storylines; humour; and the occasional serious moment.”
The quiz’s release comes amid ongoing discussion about television viewership habits and the relative popularity of different genres. BuzzFeed News has previously featured content related to sitcoms, including a quiz asking fans to identify shows from furniture in under a minute and a 1980s TV quiz geared towards Generation X viewers. Sporcle, a website dedicated to trivia and quizzes, also hosts a large collection of sitcom-related games.
Zinman acknowledges the subjective nature of compiling a “most popular” list, stating that her selection of 50 sitcoms is not exhaustive and inviting users to suggest additions in the comments. She personally identifies The Office (US) as her favorite sitcom, followed closely by The Good Place.
The quiz’s premise – distinguishing between casual viewers and dedicated “sitcom stans” – taps into a broader cultural conversation about expertise and fandom. A 2025 article from Parade.com offered 101 TV trivia questions, encompassing sitcoms alongside other genres, suggesting a continued public interest in testing and showcasing television knowledge.
BuzzFeed has promoted the quiz on its social media channels, including TikTok and Instagram, aiming to broaden its reach and engagement. As of today, BuzzFeed has not released data on the quiz’s completion rates or the average number of sitcoms identified by participants.
