Ex-Partner Questions Origin of Rabies Infection in French Man’s Death
Perpignan, France – The former girlfriend of a 30-year-old man who recently died of rabies in Occitanie, France, is challenging the prevailing theory that he contracted the virus abroad, suggesting instead he may have been infected within the Perpignan area. The case marks a rare instance of rabies transmission in Western Europe adn has prompted a public health investigation.
Osama, whose death has sparked concern over potential local transmission, reportedly suffered convulsions and scarring on his back prior to his death. While medical professionals at Perpignan hospital initially indicated a likely source of infection stemming from a dog bite during a trip to North Africa, his ex-partner, Sabrina, disputes this assessment. The uncertainty surrounding the origin of the infection underscores the challenges in diagnosing and preventing rabies, a nearly always fatal disease, even with modern medical care. Autopsy results are still pending and could provide crucial insights.
Sabrina stated, “In this case, which we stop focusing on Algeria. And that the French health authorities find the origin of this contamination. that France assumes that this can be here in perpignan.” She recounted that she last saw Osama in early September and he did not exhibit the significant scratch described by doctors when she was hospitalized.
The nurse further detailed instances that raise doubts about the Algerian origin theory. She cited a photograph Osama sent her in May showing him handling a rat at his workplace, a market gardening company. She also noted that during a hunting trip with his uncle in Algeria, his dog – known not to bite – remained closely by his side.
“We were not hiding anything and if he had been bitten by a dog, or scratched by a cat, he would have told me,” sabrina asserted. “To rest in peace, we need the truth.” The investigation continues as health officials seek to determine the source of the infection and assess any potential risk of further transmission.
