Tommy Shelby’s story continues with the release of Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man on Netflix today, March 20, 2026, following a limited two-week theatrical run that began March 6th. The film marks Cillian Murphy’s return to the role he first inhabited 13 years ago, according to reporting from How-To Geek.
The new feature-length story, written by series creator Steven Knight, picks up in 1940, finding Shelby in self-imposed exile, a period of seclusion following the events of the original six-season series which concluded in 2022. Knight previously stated his intention to extend the narrative into the Second World War era, a plan he articulated even during the early stages of the show’s run on BBC and Netflix, as reported by USA Today.
While Tommy Shelby attempts to distance himself from his criminal past, the film suggests his efforts will be unsuccessful. The synopsis indicates he will be drawn back into the world of the Peaky Blinders, now under new leadership.
Several familiar faces return alongside Murphy, including Sophie Rundle as Ada Shelby, Tommy’s sister who has transitioned into a political role as a member of the House of Commons. Johnny Dogs, played by Packy Lee, Curly (Ian Peck), and Uncle Charlie (Ned Dennehy) also reprise their roles. Stephen Graham returns as Hayden Stagg, a character who previously clashed with Tommy in the sixth season.
The film addresses a key plot point from the complete of the television series: Tommy Shelby’s apparent brush with death. The narrative reveals that a previous diagnosis of a terminal tumor was based on a false medical assessment, according to How-To Geek.
Knight has described the film as a “ghost story,” according to MSN, hinting at a thematic exploration of Shelby’s haunted past and the enduring consequences of his actions.
The release of The Immortal Man follows a four-year gap since the final episodes of the original Peaky Blinders series aired. Netflix is promoting the film alongside other Cillian Murphy performances available on the platform, including the original Peaky Blinders series and the film Oppenheimer.
