Park Chan-dae Dismisses Rumors of 인천공항 Integration as Groundless Speculation

Incheon, South Korea – Park Chan-dae, the Democratic Party’s candidate for Incheon mayor, has publicly refuted claims of a potential consolidation of South Korea’s airport authorities, calling the reports unsubstantiated speculation. Park stated he directly contacted both the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Minister of Economy and Finance, who he claims assured him that no such discussion is currently underway within the government.

“Incheon Airport is a source of national pride, a hub competing on the world stage,” Park wrote in a Facebook post on Thursday. “It cannot be treated as a simple matter of consolidation. We must invest more boldly and enhance its competitiveness.”

The controversy stems from reports that the government is considering integrating Incheon International Airport Corporation, Korea Airports Corporation, and the Gimhae New Airport Construction Corporation. This has sparked immediate backlash from local communities, including protests and press conferences, who fear the move could divert resources away from regional development.

Current Incheon Mayor Yu Jeong-bok also voiced strong opposition on Monday, warning that Incheon Airport’s profits could be “submerged in the sea off Gimhae,” referring to the location of the planned Gimhae New Airport. Yu argued that funds earmarked for regional development would be redirected elsewhere.

Park Chan-dae emphasized the importance of regional airports operating in a manner tailored to their specific local contexts. “Both the capital region and other areas must remain strong for balanced national development to succeed,” he stated, pledging to take full responsibility for protecting Incheon’s interests and urging citizens to remain assured.

The debate over the potential airport consolidation comes amid broader discussions about infrastructure investment and regional economic balance in South Korea. According to a report from the Kyonggi Ilbo, the issue has quickly become a key topic in the lead-up to the June 3 nationwide local elections.

Recent reports from The Korea Times indicate a slowdown in the rise of Seoul apartment prices, with a 7-week consecutive deceleration in the rate of increase as of March 19th. This economic context adds another layer to the concerns surrounding potential shifts in regional investment and development strategies.
