Ukrainian Drone impacts Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant
Novovoronezh, Russia – October 7, 2025 – A Ukrainian drone crashed into a cooling tower at the Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant near the Ukrainian border today, according to reports from Russian state operator Rosenergoatom. While the incident caused only minor damage, it raises concerns about the potential for escalation and the vulnerability of critical infrastructure in the ongoing conflict.
This marks the first confirmed instance of a direct Ukrainian attack targeting Russian nuclear infrastructure. Rosenergoatom stated the drone was diverted from its intended course by a Russian electronic warfare jammer and subsequently impacted one of the plant’s cooling towers. Initial assessments indicate a limited reduction in the tower’s efficiency, with the facility continuing to operate. The incident underscores the heightened risks associated with military activity near nuclear facilities and prompts questions about the effectiveness of existing safeguards.
Footage circulating online appears to corroborate the damage to the cooling tower, showing visible impact marks but no widespread structural collapse.
“Somthing hit one of two cooling towers at the nuclear Power Plant in Novovoronezh…which appears to be functioning possibly with a small amount of reduced efficiency,” reported OSINT Intuit on X (formerly Twitter).”The facility operator, ‘Rosenergoatom’, claims it was hit by a UA drone forced off course by an EW jammer.”
The Novovoronezh plant, located approximately 150 miles south of Moscow, houses multiple reactor units. Rosenergoatom maintains that the incident did not result in any release of radioactive material and poses no threat to public safety. Though, international observers are calling for increased transparency and autonomous verification of the plant’s status.
