Drake University’s Keys to Excellence Piano Series Welcomes Renowned Pianist Nicholas Roth December 1
Des moines, IA – Drake University’s acclaimed Keys to Excellence Piano Series continues it’s 2025-2026 season with a December 1 performance by Drake University faculty member and internationally recognized pianist Nicholas Roth. The concert, a memorial tribute to Sally B. Bartlett, will be held in Sheslow Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. and is free to the public.
Now in its 12th season, the Keys to Excellence Piano Series brings world-class pianists to Drake University, enriching the musical landscape of Des Moines and providing invaluable learning opportunities for students. Roth, a Yamaha Artist and Fellow of the American pianists Association, founded the series to showcase exceptional talent and foster a deeper recognition for piano performance. The series is supported by Drake University Jordan Concerts.
Roth’s program will feature Chopin’s Nocturnes Op. 27, No. 1 & Op. 37, No. 2; Beethoven’s Sonata No. 21, Op. 53 (“Waldstein”); Miaskovsky’s Song and Rhapsody,Op. 58 (1942); Scriabin’s Two Poèmes, Op. 32 & Fantasie, Op. 28; and Taneyev’s Prelude and Fugue in g-sharp minor, Op. 29. he holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Michigan State university, and has recorded for Blue Griffin, Naxos, MSR Classics & Innova recording labels.
The Keys to Excellence season also includes performances by Spencer Myer (Indiana University) on October 26-27, Marta Aznavoorian and Janet Sung (DePaul University) on november 9-10, and Molly Roseman (University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point) on Febuary 15-16.All concerts will be held in Sheslow Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.,preceded by 4:00 p.m.masterclasses.

Nicholas Roth is a featured performer and teacher throughout North and South America, Europe, and Asia. He is a Yamaha Artist, a Fellow of the American Pianists Association, earned prizes in chamber music competitions in Italy, and received a DAAD grant to further his studies in Germany. Roth holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Michigan State University and additional performance degrees from the Hochschule für Musik in Munich (Germany) and Indiana University. He has recorded for the Blue Griffin, Naxos, MSR Classics & Innova recording labels. Sally Bartlett was a long-time supporter of the Drake piano program. Her many notable contributions include gifting the grand Yamaha CFX concert grand piano in memory of her husband, William, and her father, Melvin. Mrs.Bartlett offered generous financial and moral support to many Drake piano students over the years, and her support continues through the Sally B. Bartlett Scholarship for Piano Study.
