New York City Mayor Eric Adams Ends Re-election Bid
New York City mayor Eric Adams announced Sunday he is withdrawing from the race for a second term, just weeks before the November 4th election. Originally elected as a Democrat in 2021, Adams had planned to run as an independent candidate.
In a video posted to X (formerly Twitter), adams cited challenges to his campaign, including accusations of corruption, as reasons for his decision. Despite recent speculation about a potential withdrawal, he had previously expressed confidence in his ability to defeat leading Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani.
Adams’ departure narrows the field to a contest primarily between Mamdani and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who launched an independent bid after losing the Democratic primary. Reports indicate that supporters of Cuomo had encouraged Adams to exit the race to consolidate opposition votes against Mamdani.
Recent polls showed Adams trailing considerably, placing him fourth behind Mamdani, Cuomo, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. Adams attributed his declining poll numbers to ongoing media scrutiny regarding his future and a decision by the New York campaign finance board to withhold public funds for his campaign.
In his proclamation, Adams refrained from endorsing any of the remaining candidates. He cautioned New Yorkers against supporting political movements advocating for the complete dismantling of established systems, warning that such approaches represent “chaos, not change.” This statement was widely interpreted as a criticism of Mamdani’s platform.
Mamdani responded with a statement asserting that New York City deserves ”something better than swapping one compromised politician for another.” He pledged to usher in a new era of government focused on “big capital policy and bold ideas” that would inspire pride among all New Yorkers.
