Louise Minchin: Hospitalized with Frostbite During Arctic Challenge

Louise Minchin, a former presenter for BBC Breakfast, is recovering in hospital after being diagnosed with frostbite during a challenging Arctic bike race. The 57-year-old was participating in the Inuvik Weekend Warrior Fat Bike Challenge in Canada’s Northwestern Territories when she and fellow athlete Mimi Anderson, 61, were forced to withdraw on Friday evening. The pair had been attempting to cycle 300 miles over three days to raise money for The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. According to Minchin’s Instagram post, they had completed approximately 140 kilometers (87 miles) when they made the decision to stop, facing temperatures as low as -40°C (-40°F). “When we got to this point both of us knew we were very dangerously cold,” Minchin wrote. “The combination of the temperature and wind meant despite having prepared as much as we could have it was a huge risk to go on.” Minchin confirmed that the decision proved correct, as both she and Anderson were subsequently diagnosed with frostbite and are now receiving medical care. A video posted alongside the update showed both women with bandaged fingertips. “Turns out we were right to stop. We both have frostbite and are being looked after incredibly well looked after. At the moment we remain in decent spirits,” she added. The Inuvik Weekend Warrior Fat Bike Challenge involves cycling across frozen rivers and remote highways in the Arctic wilderness. March average temperatures in the Northwestern Territories typically range from -13°C to -23°C (8.6°F to -9.4°F), but conditions on Friday were significantly colder, dropping to -30°C (-22°F) with wind chills reaching -36°C (-33°F). These wind chills can cause frostbite to develop in as little as 10 minutes. Minchin has a history of participating in demanding physical challenges, including a recent appearance on the Gladiators’ Celebrity Special where she competed in the Collision challenge. Fellow celebrities and fans have expressed support for Minchin and Anderson following the news, with messages of concern and encouragement posted online. As of Saturday, March 21, 2026, Minchin and Anderson remain hospitalized.
